Azo compound

An organic compound containing a nitrogen–nitrogen double bond, –N=N–, usually linking carbon-containing groups. Many azo compounds are intensely colored and are used as dyes and pigments.

Azo group: A functional group consisting of two nitrogen atoms joined by a double bond, written –N=N–. This bond is the defining structural feature shared by azo compounds.
Diazonium compound: An organic compound containing a positively charged diazonium group, –N₂⁺, bonded to a carbon-containing group. Aromatic diazonium ions commonly supply one partner in azo coupling.
Azo dye: A dye whose color-producing structure contains one or more azo groups. Azo compounds make up the largest and most commercially significant dye class.
Azo dye wastewater: Wastewater containing azo dyes released during dye manufacture or textile processing. Azo dyes can persist in wastewater and require treatment before discharge.
Azoxy compound: An organic compound containing an azoxy group, R–N(O)=N–R′, with oxygen attached to one azo nitrogen. The additional oxygen distinguishes azoxy compounds from ordinary azo compounds.
Diazene: The simplest compound containing a nitrogen–nitrogen double bond, with formula HN=NH. It provides a simple molecular comparison for the azo bond between carbon groups.
Electrophilic aromatic substitution: A reaction in which an electrophile replaces a hydrogen atom on an aromatic ring. Azo coupling forms the new carbon–nitrogen bond through this reaction pattern.
Pigment: An insoluble colored material used to impart color to another substance. Some azo compounds are engineered as insoluble pigments rather than soluble dyes.
Biodegradation: The breakdown of substances by living organisms or their enzymes. Microbes can transform azo dyes, often by cleaving their azo bonds.
Hydrazone: A compound containing the functional group R₂C=NNR₂, formed from a carbonyl compound and a hydrazine derivative. Hydrazones can resemble azo dyes in color but have a different bonding pattern.
