Azobenzene

Azobenzene is an aromatic compound with two phenyl groups joined by an N=N bond. Its trans and cis forms interconvert under light or heat, changing its shape and properties.

Photoisomerization: A light-induced conversion between molecular isomers without changing their chemical composition. Azobenzene switches between cis and trans configurations after absorbing light.
Molecular switch: A molecule that reversibly changes between states with distinct properties in response to an external stimulus. Azobenzene’s isomers provide light-controlled molecular states.
Azo compound: An organic compound containing two nitrogen atoms joined by an N=N bond. Azobenzene is the parent example of compounds built around the azo linkage.
Spiropyran: A photochromic molecule that reversibly switches between a closed, colorless form and an open, colored form. Unlike azobenzene’s geometric change, spiropyran switching involves ring opening.
Cis–trans isomerism: A form of stereoisomerism in which groups occupy different positions around a double bond or ring. The N=N bond gives azobenzene its two principal geometric isomers.
Photoresponsive polymer: A polymer whose structure or properties change after exposure to light. Azobenzene groups can make polymer films bend, deform, or change shape under illumination.
Aromaticity: The stabilization associated with cyclic, conjugated molecular systems containing delocalized electrons. Each phenyl ring contributes an aromatic unit to azobenzene’s electronic structure.
Diarylethene: A photochromic molecule that switches between open and closed forms through reversible ring closure. Its ring-closing mechanism provides a different route to light-controlled molecular states.
Trans-azobenzene: The more extended azobenzene isomer, with its phenyl groups on opposite sides of the N=N bond. This is the thermodynamically favored form under ordinary conditions.
Photomechanical effect: A change in a material’s shape or mechanical behavior caused by light. Repeated azobenzene isomerization can convert light input into mechanical motion.
