Azores Triple Junction

The Azores Triple Junction is the complex plate-boundary region near the Azores where the North American, Eurasian, and Nubian plates meet.

Mid-Atlantic Ridge: A submarine mountain range marking a divergent boundary between the Americas and Europe and Africa. The ridge forms the junction’s spreading boundary between the North American and Eurasian plates.
Triple junction: A point or region where the boundaries of three tectonic plates meet. The Azores structure is a real-world, spatially broad example of this geometry.
Terceira Rift: An active extensional zone in the Azores archipelago associated with volcanism and seismicity. It records local extension within the diffuse boundary region near the junction.
Diffuse plate boundary: A broad zone of deformation shared between plates rather than a single narrow boundary. The Azores boundaries spread across a region, complicating the idea of one junction point.
Azores-Gibraltar Transform Fault: A major plate-boundary system extending eastward from the Azores toward the Strait of Gibraltar. Its western segment meets the Mid-Atlantic Ridge in the junction region.
