Báb

The Báb was a 19th-century Persian religious leader who founded the Bábí faith and proclaimed himself a divine messenger preparing the way for a greater revelation.

Shiraz: A city in southwestern Iran, historically known as a center of Persian literature and culture. The Báb announced his mission in Shiraz on the evening of May 22, 1844.
Qá'im: The expected restorer of Islam in Shiʿi eschatology, identified with the Mahdi. The Báb initially presented himself as the gate to the expected Qá'im before making a broader claim.
Baháʼu'lláh: The founder of the Baháʼí Faith, who declared himself the promised figure foretold by the Báb. Baháʼu'lláh became the central fulfillment of the Báb’s expectation of a subsequent revelation.
Conference of Badasht: An 1848 gathering of Bábí leaders that publicly clarified the movement’s separation from Islamic law. The meeting dramatized the doctrinal break associated with the Báb’s new dispensation.
Qajar Iran: The Iranian state ruled by the Qajar dynasty from 1789 to 1925. The Báb’s ministry unfolded amid Qajar rule and its religious and political institutions.
Bayán: The principal revealed work of the Báb, comprising the Persian Bayán and the Arabic Bayán. It sets out Bábí laws and teachings, while framing them as provisional before a future revelation.
Subh-i-Azal: A younger half-brother of Baháʼu'lláh appointed by the Báb as a nominal leader of the Bábí community. His leadership and later conflict with Baháʼu'lláh divided the community after the Báb’s death.
Siege of Fort Tabarsi: An 1848–1849 siege in which Bábí followers resisted Qajar forces at a shrine in Mazandaran. The siege became a major episode in the violent suppression of the Báb’s followers.
Shaykhism: A Shiʿi Islamic school founded by Shaykh Ahmad al-Ahsa'i, emphasizing esoteric interpretation and the expectation of the Mahdi. Shaykhi expectations shaped the religious setting in which the Báb’s first followers recognized him.
Bábí calendar: A solar calendar of nineteen months, each containing nineteen days, with intercalary days. The Báb established a distinctive calendar as part of the community’s religious order.
