Baburnama

The autobiographical memoir of Babur, founder of the Mughal Empire, written in Chagatai Turkic in the sixteenth century. It recounts his campaigns, political fortunes, and observations of people, places, and nature.

Babur: A Central Asian ruler and founder of the Mughal Empire who wrote an autobiographical memoir. His first-person account supplies the memoir’s narrative voice and personal perspective.

First-person narrative: Narration in which a speaker recounts events using a first-person perspective. Babur’s direct voice makes political decisions and personal reactions part of the same account.
Battle of Panipat (1526): The 1526 battle in which Babur defeated Ibrahim Lodi and established Mughal rule in northern India. Its victory marks the decisive culmination of Babur’s campaigns in the memoir.
Battle of Khanwa: The 1527 battle in which Babur defeated the Rajput confederacy led by Rana Sanga. Babur’s account documents the military and political stakes of consolidating his Indian conquests.
Humayun-nama: Gulbadan Begum’s Persian account of the Mughal family and the reigns of Babur and Humayun. Its female author and family-centered perspective offer a different view of the dynasty’s founding generation.
