Baby boomers

Baby boomers are people born during the post–World War II rise in birth rates, commonly dated in the United States from 1946 to 1964.

Post–World War II baby boom: A sharp rise in births across several countries after World War II. This broad demographic surge gave the U.S. generation its name and defining dates.
Demographic transition: The long-term shift from high birth and death rates to lower birth and death rates as societies change. Boomers formed during a population transition that later changed age structures and growth.
Generation gap: Differences in attitudes, values, and experiences between age groups. Boomers became a prominent reference point in debates about generational differences.

United States birth rate: The number of live births per person or population unit in the United States over a given period. Its postwar rise and later decline mark the conventional boundaries of the U.S. boom.
Medicare (United States): The U.S. federal health insurance program chiefly for people aged 65 and older. As boomers reached eligibility, their numbers shaped projections of Medicare spending and enrollment.
