Knowra Bach Revival Bach Revival The nineteenth-century renewal of public performance, publication, and scholarly study of Johann Sebastian Bach’s music, after much of it had fallen from public attention.
Felix Mendelssohn : A German composer, conductor, and pianist whose works include the oratorio Elijah and the Hebrides Overture. His 1829 Berlin performance of the St Matthew Passion helped launch the revival.
Bach–Gesellschaft Ausgabe : The nineteenth-century collected edition of Johann Sebastian Bach’s works, issued by the Bach-Gesellschaft between 1851 and 1899. It supplied performers and scholars with a broad, systematically published corpus.
Robert Schumann : A German composer, pianist, and music critic whose works include Carnaval and the Rhenish Symphony. He promoted Bach’s music and helped establish the Bach-Gesellschaft.

Bach cantata : A vocal work, often sacred, composed by Johann Sebastian Bach for church services or other occasions. The revival eventually brought a vast body of his cantatas into published and performed circulation.
Sing-Akademie zu Berlin : A Berlin choral society founded in 1791 that performed and preserved music, including works by Bach. Its choir and archive made Mendelssohn’s landmark Passion performance possible.
Bach-Werke-Verzeichnis : The thematic catalogue of Johann Sebastian Bach’s works, compiled by Wolfgang Schmieder and first published in 1950. Its later catalogue system built on the revival’s recovery and publication of Bach’s works.
