Knowra Bacterial cell structure Bacterial cell structure Bacterial cell structure is the organization of a bacterium’s membrane, cytoplasm, genetic material, and other components. Most bacteria also have a cell wall, and some possess additional external or internal structures.
Bacterial cell membrane : A phospholipid membrane enclosing a bacterial cell and regulating exchange with its surroundings. It forms the cell’s boundary and supports transport and energy-converting processes.
Bacterial cell division : The process by which one bacterial cell grows and divides into daughter cells, usually by binary fission. The chromosome, membrane, and wall must be coordinated as the cell divides.
Archaea : A domain of single-celled organisms distinct from bacteria and eukaryotes, with characteristic membrane chemistry and molecular machinery. Archaea resemble bacteria in cellular organization but differ in key molecular structures.
Antibiotic : A substance that kills bacteria or inhibits their growth at concentrations tolerable to a host. Many antibiotics work by disrupting bacterial walls, membranes, or ribosomes.
Bacterial cytoplasm : The aqueous interior of a bacterial cell, containing molecules, ribosomes, and other cellular structures. Most bacterial metabolism and protein synthesis take place within this interior.
Bacterial chromosome replication : The copying of a bacterial chromosome before cell division, usually beginning at a defined origin. Replication duplicates the genetic material organized in the nucleoid.
Eukaryotic cell : A cell with a membrane-bound nucleus and other membrane-bound organelles. Its compartmentalized organization contrasts with the typical bacterial cell.
Penicillin : A β-lactam antibiotic that inhibits bacterial cell-wall synthesis by targeting penicillin-binding proteins. It exploits a structural feature absent from human cells: the bacterial peptidoglycan wall.
Nucleoid : The irregular region of a prokaryotic cell containing its main chromosome, without a surrounding membrane. It organizes the chromosome in a cell lacking a membrane-bound nucleus.
Bacterial flagellum : A rotating, filamentous structure that propels many bacteria through liquid or across surfaces. This external appendage extends the cell’s functional architecture into its surroundings.
