Bacterial morphology

Bacterial morphology is the description and classification of bacterial cell shapes, sizes, and arrangements. These visible traits help distinguish bacterial groups but do not, by themselves, identify a species.

Coccus: A roughly spherical bacterial cell. Cocci form characteristic pairs, chains, clusters, or packets.
Binary fission: A form of asexual reproduction in which one cell divides into two daughter cells. Repeated division determines whether cells remain paired, chained, or separate.
Bacterial staining: The use of dyes to make bacterial cells and their structures easier to examine. Staining makes cell outlines and groupings visible in light microscopy.
Bacterial taxonomy: The science of naming and classifying bacteria into related groups. Taxonomic identity depends on evidence beyond visible form.
Bacillus: A rod-shaped bacterial cell. Rod length and grouping distinguish common bacterial forms.
Bacterial cell wall: A structural layer outside the bacterial cell membrane that helps maintain cell shape and resist pressure. Wall architecture helps stabilize characteristic cell outlines.
Gram stain: A differential staining method that separates many bacteria by cell-wall properties. It commonly reveals bacterial shape and arrangement while distinguishing wall types.
Bacterial physiology: The study of how bacterial cells function, grow, and respond to their environments. Physiology explains traits that morphology alone cannot show.
Vibrio: A curved, comma-shaped bacterial cell. Its curved rod shape is a distinct morphological form.
Peptidoglycan: A mesh-like polymer of sugars and amino acids that forms the bacterial cell wall. This wall material provides much of the mechanical support for bacterial shape.
