Bacterial ribosome

A bacterial ribosome is a ribonucleoprotein complex that translates messenger RNA into protein. It typically consists of 30S and 50S subunits, which assemble into a 70S ribosome.

30S ribosomal subunit: The small bacterial ribosomal subunit, containing 16S ribosomal RNA and proteins that help decode messenger RNA. It binds messenger RNA and checks codon–anticodon pairing during translation.
16S ribosomal RNA: The RNA molecule forming the structural and functional core of the bacterial 30S subunit. Its conserved regions decode messenger RNA and provide a standard for identifying bacteria.
Tetracycline: An antibiotic that binds the bacterial 30S subunit and inhibits aminoacyl-tRNA entry into the ribosome. It blocks a step in decoding by preventing incoming tRNA from reaching the A site.
Eukaryotic ribosome: A cytoplasmic ribosome in eukaryotes, typically composed of 40S and 60S subunits that form an 80S complex. Its different subunit composition helps explain why some antibiotics selectively affect bacteria.
50S ribosomal subunit: The large bacterial ribosomal subunit, containing 23S and 5S ribosomal RNA and proteins. Its peptidyl-transferase center forms peptide bonds as the ribosome elongates a protein.
23S ribosomal RNA: The large RNA molecule that forms the main catalytic and structural core of the bacterial 50S subunit. It supplies the peptidyl-transferase center that catalyzes peptide-bond formation.
Aminoglycoside: A class of antibiotics that binds the bacterial 30S subunit and disrupts translation accuracy or initiation. Its binding can cause mistranslation and defective proteins.
Mitochondrial ribosome: A ribosome inside mitochondria that synthesizes proteins encoded by mitochondrial DNA. Its bacterial ancestry gives it similarities to bacterial ribosomes, but its composition has diverged.
Translation initiation in bacteria: The stage of bacterial protein synthesis in which the ribosome assembles at a start codon with initiator transfer RNA. Initiation positions the 30S subunit, start codon, and initiator tRNA before 50S joining.
5S ribosomal RNA: A small ribosomal RNA molecule found in the large subunits of bacteria and many other organisms. It is one of the RNA components of the 50S subunit.
