Bacteriology

Bacteriology is the scientific study of bacteria, including their structure, physiology, genetics, classification, and effects on other organisms and environments.

Bacterial cell: A cell lacking a membrane-bound nucleus, with bacterial-specific structures such as a peptidoglycan cell wall. Its structures are the basic objects examined in bacteriology.
Bacterial culture: The growth of bacteria under controlled conditions in or on nutrient media. Culturing produces material for observation and experimental testing.
Clinical microbiology: The laboratory study of microorganisms that cause disease in humans, supporting diagnosis and treatment. It applies bacterial identification and susceptibility testing to patient care.
Antonie van Leeuwenhoek: A Dutch microscopist whose seventeenth-century observations included some of the first recorded descriptions of bacteria. His microscopy brought previously unseen bacterial forms into recorded observation.
Antibiotics: Medicines that kill bacteria or inhibit their growth. Bacteriology enabled the discovery, testing, and clinical use of antibacterial drugs.
Bacterial metabolism: The chemical reactions bacteria use to obtain energy and build cellular materials. Metabolic traits help explain bacterial growth and identification.
Gram stain: A differential staining method that separates bacteria by cell-wall properties into Gram-positive and Gram-negative groups. It provides a rapid structural distinction used in bacterial identification.
Antibiotic susceptibility testing: Laboratory testing that determines whether a microorganism is inhibited by particular antimicrobial drugs. It guides treatment choices for bacterial infections.
Louis Pasteur: A French chemist and microbiologist whose work established microbial roles in fermentation and helped develop vaccines. His experiments advanced the study of bacterial processes and disease.
Antimicrobial resistance: The ability of microorganisms to survive exposure to drugs that would normally inhibit or kill them. Bacterial evolution makes resistance a major consequence of antimicrobial use.
