Bactria

Bactria was an ancient Central Asian region centered on the upper Amu Darya, encompassing parts of modern Afghanistan, Uzbekistan, and Tajikistan. Its location made it a crossroads between Iranian, Indian, and Central Asian worlds.

Bactria–Margiana Archaeological Complex: A Bronze Age network of settlements and material cultures across southern Central Asia, often called the Oxus civilization. Its settlements reveal complex societies in the region before Bactria became prominent in written history.
Amu Darya: A major Central Asian river that flows from the Pamirs toward the Aral Sea. Its upper reaches formed the geographic core of ancient Bactria.
Silk Road: A network of overland routes that connected East Asia with Central and western Asia and the Mediterranean world. Bactria’s position made it a key passage in the routes linking these regions.

Hindu Kush: A mountain range stretching across Afghanistan and northern Pakistan, separating Central Asia from the Indian subcontinent. Its passes linked Bactria with regions to the south and southeast.
Bactrian language: An eastern Iranian language used in ancient Bactria, written in a script derived from Greek. Its inscriptions document local administration and cultural life under successive rulers.
Eucratides I: A Greco-Bactrian king who ruled during the second century BCE and expanded his kingdom’s territory. His reign illustrates Bactria’s reach and the conflicts that marked its Hellenistic era.
Alexander the Great: The Macedonian king who conquered the Achaemenid Empire and campaigned across Central Asia and northwest India. His conquest brought Bactria under Macedonian rule and helped reshape its political order.
Sogdia: An ancient Central Asian region centered on the Zeravshan and Kashkadarya valleys, north of Bactria. The neighboring region shared trade routes and political ties with Bactria.
