Baggage handling system

A network of conveyors, scanners, sorters, and handling procedures that moves checked baggage between airport check-in, aircraft, and collection points.

Baggage tag: A label attached to checked luggage that encodes routing information and identifies the bag. Its barcode or radio tag lets equipment associate a bag with its destination.
Airport terminal: A building where passengers check in, pass through security, and board or leave aircraft. Baggage routes connect terminal counters and arrival halls with aircraft stands.

Tilt-tray sorter: A conveyor sorter whose tilting trays discharge items into selected chutes. It is one common way to divert bags from a shared conveyor route.
Barcode: A machine-readable pattern of lines or other marks that encodes information. Barcode scanners commonly read routing data printed on baggage tags.
