Baghdad Pact

The Baghdad Pact was a 1955 security alliance linking Iraq, Turkey, Britain, Iran, and Pakistan. Intended to contain Soviet influence in the Middle East, it became the Central Treaty Organization in 1959.

Northern Tier: A Cold War strategy to link states north of the Middle East in a barrier against Soviet expansion. The pact was the main institutional expression of this regional containment strategy.
Mutual defense: An agreement in which states commit to assist one another if one is attacked. The pact's members undertook cooperation against aggression, but its treaty did not create NATO-style automatic defense.
1958 Iraqi coup d'état: A military coup that overthrew Iraq's Hashemite monarchy and brought the republic to power in July 1958. The coup ended Iraq's membership and removed the pact's only Arab member.
North Atlantic Treaty Organization: A transatlantic military alliance founded in 1949, whose members pledged collective defense under Article 5. Unlike NATO, the Baghdad Pact lacked a comparable binding collective-defense guarantee.
United States containment policy: The strategy of limiting the expansion of Soviet power and influence after World War II. U.S. support for the pact reflected containment, although Washington did not join it.
Military alliance: A formal arrangement in which states coordinate their security policies or military efforts. The Baghdad Pact joined regional members through a shared security framework.
Hashemite Iraq: The Kingdom of Iraq under the Hashemite dynasty, which ruled from 1921 until the 1958 revolution. Its government joined the pact, making Iraq a crucial link between Turkey and the Arab world.
Southeast Asia Treaty Organization: A Cold War alliance founded in 1954 to contain communism in Southeast Asia and the wider Pacific region. SEATO was another U.S.-backed regional pact, but it covered a different strategic region.
Cold War: A global political and strategic rivalry between the United States and the Soviet Union from the mid-1940s to 1991. The alliance was formed within the Cold War contest for influence in the Middle East.
Central Treaty Organization: A Cold War alliance formed in 1959 when the Baghdad Pact was renamed after Iraq withdrew. It continued the pact's institutional structure under a new name.
