Baháʼí Faith

A monotheistic religion founded by Baháʼu’lláh in 19th-century Persia. It teaches the unity of God, the essential unity of religions, and the oneness of humanity.

Baháʼu’lláh: The founder of the Baháʼí Faith, regarded by Baháʼís as a Manifestation of God. His writings and teachings form the faith’s central scripture and authority.
Universal House of Justice: The elected international governing body of the Baháʼí Faith, based in Haifa, Israel. It administers the global community under authority established in Baháʼí scripture.
Báb: The founder of the Bábí religion, whose teachings anticipated the coming of a greater divine messenger. His movement prepared the religious setting in which Baháʼu’lláh declared his mission.
ʻAbdu’l-Bahá: Baháʼu’lláh’s son and appointed successor, known in the Baháʼí Faith as the Center of the Covenant. He led the community after Baháʼu’lláh’s death and interpreted his teachings.
Islam: A monotheistic religion founded in seventh-century Arabia, centered on the Qur’an and the prophethood of Muhammad. The Baháʼí Faith arose in a Muslim-majority society and interprets Islam within progressive revelation.
Manifestation of God: A divine messenger who reveals religious teachings suited to a particular age. Baháʼí theology uses this concept to explain how revelation unfolds across religions.
Local Spiritual Assembly: An elected nine-member institution that administers Baháʼí community affairs in a locality. It is the faith’s principal local administrative body.
Bábí religion: A 19th-century Persian religion founded by the Báb and regarded by Baháʼís as a precursor to their faith. The Baháʼí Faith grew from this movement and identifies the Báb as an independent Manifestation of God.
Shoghi Effendi: The Guardian of the Baháʼí Faith from 1921 until his death in 1957. He translated scripture, developed the faith’s administration, and guided its international expansion.
Christianity: A monotheistic religion centered on the life and teachings of Jesus Christ and the Bible. Baháʼí teachings affirm Jesus as a Manifestation of God while interpreting his return symbolically.
