Baháʼu'lláh

Baháʼu'lláh (1817–1892), born Mírzá Ḥusayn-ʿAlí Núrí in Persia, founded the Baháʼí Faith. Baháʼís regard him as a Manifestation of God.

Báb: The founder of the Bábí religion, whose teachings announced an imminent divine messenger. Baháʼu'lláh became a prominent Bábí before declaring his own religious mission.
Baháʼí Faith: A monotheistic religion founded by Baháʼu'lláh in nineteenth-century Persia. Its teachings and institutions developed from his writings and mission.
Kitáb-i-Íqán: A Persian theological work by Baháʼu'lláh interpreting prophetic symbolism and religious expectation. It made a case for recognizing new revelation across religious traditions.
ʻAbdu'l-Bahá: Baháʼu'lláh's eldest son and appointed successor, who led the Baháʼí community from 1892 to 1921. His appointment made him the authorized interpreter and head of the community after Baháʼu'lláh.
Universal House of Justice: The elected international governing body of the Baháʼí Faith, established in 1963. Baháʼu'lláh's laws provide for this institution's role in guiding the community.
Bábí movement: A nineteenth-century Persian religious movement founded by the Báb. Its persecution and prophetic expectations formed the setting for Baháʼu'lláh's emergence.
Manifestation of God: A divine messenger who reveals God's attributes and teachings to humanity in Baháʼí theology. Baháʼís understand Baháʼu'lláh through this central theological category.

Mírzá Yaḥyá: A half-brother of Baháʼu'lláh who became a rival leader among the Bábís. Their conflict exposed competing claims to leadership after the Báb's death.
Baháʼí administrative order: The elected and appointed institutions through which Baháʼí communities are organized. Its institutional framework carries forward principles set out in Baháʼu'lláh's writings.
