Bahrain Island
Bahrain Island is the largest island in the Kingdom of Bahrain. It contains the capital, Manama, and most of the country’s population.
Bahrain: An island country in the Persian Gulf, officially the Kingdom of Bahrain. Bahrain Island forms the country’s largest landmass and its main population center.
Dilmun: An ancient civilization and trading network centered in the Persian Gulf, with Bahrain as a major center. Archaeological sites on Bahrain Island identify it as a heartland of Dilmun.
Bahrain International Airport: Bahrain’s principal international airport, located on Muharraq Island. It serves Bahrain Island’s population through the connected metropolitan transport network.
Land reclamation in Bahrain: The creation of new land in Bahrain by filling shallow coastal waters. Reclamation has expanded the island’s built-up area and altered its shoreline.
Manama: The capital and largest city of Bahrain, on the northeastern coast of Bahrain Island. Manama anchors the island’s northeastern urban area and national government.
Qal'at al-Bahrain: An archaeological site on Bahrain Island containing layers of settlement from the Dilmun period onward. Its excavated layers document the island’s long history as a settled and fortified place.
Bahrain Financial Harbour: A commercial development on Manama’s waterfront, housing offices, residences, and retail space. It exemplifies the high-rise financial development reshaping the island’s capital coast.
Urbanization in Bahrain: The growth of towns and cities across Bahrain, especially around Manama. The island concentrates this growth, producing a largely continuous urban landscape.
Muharraq Island: An island northeast of Bahrain Island, linked to it by causeways and bridges. Its proximity and transport links connect the main island to Bahrain’s historic airport and urban region.
Bahrain Fort: A Portuguese-built fort on Bahrain Island, standing within the archaeological site of Qal'at al-Bahrain. The fort marks a later strategic phase in the island’s history.
