Bai Chongxi

Bai Chongxi (1893–1966) was a Chinese Nationalist general and politician, prominent in the Guangxi clique and a leading commander in the Republic of China military.

Li Zongren: A Chinese Nationalist general and politician who became vice president of the Republic of China. Bai’s longtime Guangxi ally, Li shared command and political influence with him.
Guangxi clique: A regional military-political faction in Guangxi whose leaders included Bai Chongxi, Li Zongren, and Huang Shaohong. Bai’s authority grew from this faction’s control of Guangxi and its forces.
Battle of Shanghai: A major 1937 battle between Chinese and Japanese forces during the Second Sino-Japanese War. Bai helped plan the Nationalist defense of Shanghai against the Japanese invasion.
Chinese Civil War: The conflict between Chinese Communist and Nationalist forces that culminated in the establishment of the People’s Republic of China in 1949. Bai’s military and political career ended in defeat and retreat during this conflict.
Chiang Kai-shek: A Chinese Nationalist leader who headed the Republic of China government for much of the mid-twentieth century. Bai served under Chiang while repeatedly contesting his control over military and political appointments.

Battle of Taierzhuang: A 1938 Chinese victory over Japanese forces during the Battle of Xuzhou. Bai’s strategic guidance contributed to the Nationalist victory at Taierzhuang.
Republic of China retreat to Taiwan: The relocation of the Republic of China government and its forces to Taiwan after losing mainland China in 1949. Bai left the mainland with the Nationalist government and continued serving in Taiwan.
Huang Shaohong: A Guangxi politician and military leader who became a senior official in the Republic of China government. His partnership with Bai and Li helped establish the Guangxi clique.
Guangxi: A province in southern China bordering Vietnam and the Gulf of Tonkin. The province was the home base of Bai’s military and political faction.
