Bakelite

Bakelite is a trademarked phenol-formaldehyde plastic, among the first synthetic resins. Its heat resistance and electrical insulation made it useful for molded goods and electrical components.

Phenol-formaldehyde resin: A thermosetting polymer made by reacting phenol with formaldehyde. Bakelite is a commercial form of this resin family.
Leo Baekeland: A Belgian-American chemist and inventor who developed Bakelite. Baekeland developed and patented the resin that became Bakelite.
Electrical insulator: A material that resists the flow of electric current. Bakelite’s insulating properties suited it to housings and electrical fittings.
Melamine formaldehyde: A thermosetting resin made from melamine and formaldehyde, often used in durable molded goods and laminates. It offered a lighter-colored alternative to Bakelite for tableware and surfaces.
Phenol: An aromatic organic compound with a hydroxyl group bonded to a benzene ring. Phenol supplies the aromatic units in Bakelite’s polymer network.
Bakelite patent: Leo Baekeland’s 1907 patent for producing insoluble, infusible condensation products of phenol and formaldehyde. The patent records the process that made Bakelite a controllable commercial material.
Molded case circuit breaker: A circuit breaker enclosed in an insulating molded housing. Bakelite and related phenolic compounds served in durable electrical housings.
Urea-formaldehyde resin: A thermosetting resin made by reacting urea with formaldehyde. It is another early molding resin, generally less heat-resistant than phenolic material.
Formaldehyde: A simple, reactive aldehyde with the formula CH₂O. Formaldehyde links phenol-derived units during resin formation.
Celluloid: An early plastic made chiefly from cellulose nitrate and camphor. Unlike flammable celluloid, Bakelite offered a heat-resistant alternative for molded objects.
