Ballad

A ballad is a narrative poem or song traditionally shaped by repeated patterns, simple diction, and dramatic incidents. It often tells its story through dialogue and leaves motives or outcomes unresolved.

Ballad stanza: A quatrain, often alternating four- and three-stress lines, used in many English-language ballads. Its alternating line lengths provide a common framework for ballad storytelling.
Barbara Allen: A traditional English-language ballad about rejected love, illness, and death. Its many variants show how a ballad can persist through oral retelling.
Epic poetry: Long narrative poetry that recounts heroic deeds and events central to a culture. Epics generally sustain a broader scale and elevated style than ballads’ concentrated incidents.
