Bank for International Settlements

The Bank for International Settlements (BIS) is an international organization owned by central banks that fosters their cooperation and supports monetary and financial stability.

Basel Committee on Banking Supervision: A committee of banking supervisors that develops standards and guidance for the prudential regulation of banks. The BIS hosts its secretariat and provides a forum for its international supervisory standards.
Young Plan: The 1929 agreement that reorganized Germany’s First World War reparations and proposed a new international institution to administer payments. Its proposed reparations bank became the basis for establishing the BIS.

Hague Conference of 1930: A 1930 international conference that approved arrangements for implementing the Young Plan and establishing the BIS. The conference finalized the agreements that created the bank.
Hjalmar Schacht: German central banker who led the Reichsbank during the interwar period and helped negotiate the Young Plan. His negotiations over reparations helped produce the proposal for the BIS.
Global financial crisis: A severe international financial crisis that began in 2007 and culminated in the 2008 banking collapse and recession. The crisis intensified the BIS’s work on systemic risk and prompted major regulatory reforms.
Committee on Payments and Market Infrastructures: An international committee that promotes the safety and efficiency of payment, clearing, and settlement arrangements. The BIS hosts its secretariat and supports its work on financial market infrastructure.
First World War reparations: Payments imposed on Germany after the First World War under the Treaty of Versailles. Administering reparations payments was the BIS’s original purpose.
