Fiat money : Money that has value by government decree and public acceptance rather than redemption for a commodity. Most modern banknotes are fiat money, not claims redeemable for a fixed quantity of gold.
Jiaozi : A Chinese paper currency used during the Song dynasty, often described as the earliest government-issued paper money. Song-era Jiaozi shows an early transition from merchant receipts to officially issued paper currency.
Cash : Physical money, including coins and banknotes, used for direct payment. Banknotes are a major form of cash and share its immediate, offline settlement.
Coin : A small, usually metallic piece of money issued by an authority for use in payment. Coins are physical currency like banknotes but differ in material, denomination, and production.
Central bank : A public institution that manages a country’s currency, monetary policy, and financial system. Central banks commonly issue banknotes and control their supply.
Promissory note : A written promise by one party to pay a specified sum to another, either on demand or at a stated date. Early banknotes grew out of transferable promises and deposit receipts.
Cash-in-transit : The secure transport of physical money between banks, businesses, and cash-processing facilities. Banknotes require specialized logistics to move safely between issuers, banks, and retailers.
Check : A written order directing a bank to pay a specified sum from an account to a named recipient or bearer. A check instructs a bank to transfer funds; it is not itself issued currency.
Legal tender : A form of payment that must be accepted to settle debts under a jurisdiction’s law. Legal-tender status determines whether banknotes can discharge monetary debts.
Bank of England : The United Kingdom’s central bank, founded in 1694 to support government finance and oversee monetary affairs. Its early notes helped establish bank-issued paper money in Europe.
