Bantustan

A territory designated as a homeland for Black South Africans under apartheid, often granted nominal self-government while its residents were denied equal political rights.

Apartheid: A system of racial segregation and white minority rule enforced in South Africa from 1948 to the early 1990s. Bantustans were central instruments of apartheid’s territorial and political segregation.
Transkei: A territory in southeastern South Africa that became the first Bantustan declared independent by the apartheid government. Its 1976 declaration marked the first attempt to present a homeland as a sovereign state.
Hendrik Verwoerd: South African prime minister from 1958 to 1966 and a principal architect of apartheid. He promoted separate development and framed homelands as a solution to Black political claims.
South African citizenship: The legal membership that grants a person rights and duties within the Republic of South Africa. Homeland citizenship laws denied many Black residents the national citizenship Bantustans were designed to replace.
South African Land Act, 1913: A law that restricted Black South Africans’ land ownership to designated areas covering a small fraction of the country. Its territorial restrictions preceded and helped prepare the ground for homeland policy.
Bantu Authorities Act, 1951: A South African law that established tribal authorities and laid groundwork for territorial homelands. It created administrative structures through which the government organized homeland rule.
Bophuthatswana: A Tswana homeland in South Africa, declared independent by the apartheid government in 1977. Its dispersed territory and mining economy exposed the practical limits of homeland sovereignty.
Mangosuthu Buthelezi: A Zulu political leader who headed the KwaZulu homeland government and opposed its nominal independence. His refusal to accept independence distinguished KwaZulu from the four declared independent homelands.
Self-determination: The principle that a people may determine its political status and pursue its economic, social, and cultural development. The government invoked self-determination while restricting residents’ choices and political rights.
Migrant labour in South Africa: A labor system in which workers migrated temporarily from rural homes to jobs, especially in South African mines and cities. Bantustans supplied labor while keeping workers’ families and political claims outside white urban areas.
