Banu Hilal

Banu Hilal was an Arab Bedouin tribal confederation whose migration from Arabia across North Africa began in the 11th century, reshaping the region’s settlement and language.

Najd: A highland region of central Arabia, historically home to many Bedouin communities. Banu Hilal’s early homeland lay among the tribal societies of central Arabia.
Arabization: The spread of Arabic language and culture among populations previously speaking other languages. Hilali settlement accelerated the spread of Arabic across much of the Maghreb.
Al-Muʿizz ibn Badis: A Zirid ruler of Ifriqiya from 1016 to 1062 who recognized Fatimid authority before breaking with it. His repudiation of the Fatimids preceded their encouragement of Hilali movement west.
Malhun: A genre of Moroccan vernacular poetry and song, traditionally performed with instrumental accompaniment. Moroccan performances of the Hilali epic belong to a living tradition of vernacular storytelling.
Banu Sulaym: An Arab tribal confederation that migrated westward into North Africa alongside Banu Hilal. Their parallel migration connected Hilal’s movement to a wider tribal relocation.

Fatimid Caliphate: A Shiʿi Ismaʿili caliphate that ruled parts of North Africa and the Middle East from 909 to 1171. Fatimid rulers redirected Hilali tribes westward amid conflict with Zirid governors.
Bedouin: Pastoral nomadic peoples of the deserts and steppe regions of North Africa and the Middle East. Hilal’s migration carried Bedouin pastoral practices into new North African regions.
