Bảo Đại

Bảo Đại was the last emperor of Vietnam, reigning from 1926 to 1945, and later head of state of the State of Vietnam from 1949 to 1955.

Nguyễn dynasty: Vietnam’s last imperial dynasty, which ruled from 1802 until the abdication of its final emperor in 1945. Bảo Đại inherited its throne as its final ruler.
Vietnamese monarchy: The institution of hereditary kingship that governed Vietnamese states for much of their recorded history. Bảo Đại’s imperial office was the final form of this institution.
Democratic Republic of Vietnam: A Vietnamese state proclaimed by Hồ Chí Minh in September 1945 after the August Revolution. The new republic received Bảo Đại’s formal transfer of imperial authority.
Việt Minh: A Vietnamese-led national liberation coalition founded in 1941 under the leadership of Hồ Chí Minh. Its revolutionary government replaced Bảo Đại’s imperial rule in 1945.
Khải Định: The Nguyễn emperor who ruled Vietnam from 1916 to 1925 and was Bảo Đại’s father. His death brought Bảo Đại to the throne.
Coup d'État of 1945: Japan’s March 1945 seizure of direct control from French authorities in French Indochina. It ended the colonial arrangement under which Bảo Đại had nominally reigned.
Hồ Chí Minh: A Vietnamese revolutionary leader who founded the Indochinese Communist Party and led the Democratic Republic of Vietnam. He headed the government that followed Bảo Đại’s abdication.

Abdication of Bảo Đại: Bảo Đại’s 1945 renunciation of the throne after the August Revolution. It formally ended his imperial reign and transferred authority to the revolutionary government.
