Bao Zhao

Bao Zhao (c. 414–466) was a Chinese poet and prose writer of the Liu Song dynasty. His work includes yuefu poems marked by forceful language and attention to hardship and frustrated ambition.

Yuefu: A Chinese poetic tradition originating in songs collected or produced by the Music Bureau, later imitated by literary poets. Bao Zhao wrote celebrated poems in this tradition, adapting its song forms to literary expression.
Wu Cheng'en's March to the North: A long yuefu poem by Bao Zhao depicting a soldier’s arduous journey and the costs of military service. This narrative poem makes the suffering of an ordinary soldier central to Bao Zhao’s yuefu practice.
Liu Yiqing: A Liu Song prince and writer who sponsored literary activity and compiled the New Accounts of the Tales of the World. Bao Zhao served Liu Yiqing, connecting his early career to aristocratic literary patronage.
