Bar chart

A graph that compares categories using rectangular bars whose lengths or heights represent values. Bar charts make differences between discrete groups visible through a shared scale.

Categorical data: Data that assign observations to distinct groups or labels rather than measuring them on a continuous scale. Each bar represents a category, such as a product, region, or response group.
Horizontal bar chart: A bar chart with bars extending horizontally from a value axis. Horizontal bars accommodate long category labels and make lengths easy to compare.
Histogram: A graph that groups numerical observations into adjacent intervals and displays their frequencies with bars. A histogram’s bars represent continuous intervals, unlike a bar chart’s separate categories.
Pareto chart: A descending bar chart of category frequencies, often paired with a cumulative-percentage line. It ranks causes or categories to highlight the largest contributors.
Quantitative data: Data expressed as numerical counts or measurements that can be compared arithmetically. Bar lengths encode numerical values associated with the categories.
Grouped bar chart: A bar chart that places multiple bars side by side within each category. Side-by-side bars compare subgroups within the same categories.
Dot plot: A graph that represents values with dots positioned along a scale. Dots can compare category values with less visual weight than filled bars.
Error bar: A graphical mark showing uncertainty or variability around an estimate. Error bars add uncertainty information to category estimates shown by bar height.
Axis (graph): A reference line on a graph that defines a direction and often carries a scale. The value axis provides the reference against which bar lengths are read.
Stacked bar chart: A bar chart that divides each bar into segments representing component values. Stacking shows both category totals and their component contributions.
