Barangay

A barangay is the smallest administrative division of the Philippines and a local government unit led by elected officials. It combines community-level administration with local public services.

Punong barangay: The elected chief executive of a barangay in the Philippines. Leads the barangay government and presides over its council.
Barangay (historical polity): A precolonial Philippine community and political unit, often led by a datu. The modern administrative name draws on this earlier form of community organization.
Barangay health worker: A trained community volunteer who provides basic health services in a Philippine barangay. Connects residents with preventive care and local health programs.
Purok: A neighborhood or subunit within some Philippine barangays, without uniform national administrative status. Often organizes residents within a barangay but is not a separate local government unit.
Sangguniang barangay: The legislative council of a barangay in the Philippines. Passes local ordinances and helps shape barangay policy.
Datu: A title for a leader or noble in many historical Philippine societies. Datus led some precolonial communities later described as barangays.
Barangay tanod: A community peacekeeping volunteer who assists with public safety in a Philippine barangay. Supports local order and assists barangay officials with safety concerns.
Sari-sari store: A small neighborhood convenience shop common in the Philippines. A familiar community institution, but unlike a barangay it is privately operated.
Sangguniang kabataan: An elected youth council in Philippine barangays, representing residents aged 15 to 30. Provides a formal channel for youth representation in barangay affairs.
Spanish East Indies: The Spanish colonial territories in Asia, including the Philippine archipelago. Spanish colonial rule reshaped local settlement and political administration.
