Barbara Hepworth

Barbara Hepworth (1903–1975) was a British sculptor whose abstract works in wood, stone, and bronze helped shape modernist sculpture.

Pelagos: A 1946 Hepworth sculpture combining carved wood, string, and a concave, shell-like form. Its hollowed shape and taut strings connect abstraction to the Cornish seascape.
Direct carving: A sculptural method in which the artist cuts directly into a material rather than modeling a preliminary design. Hepworth used direct carving to let the qualities of stone and wood shape the finished work.
