Barbara McClintock

Barbara McClintock was an American geneticist who discovered mobile genetic elements in maize and received the 1983 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.

Transposable element: A DNA sequence that can move to new positions within a genome. McClintock discovered that these elements move within maize chromosomes and affect nearby genes.
Maize: A cereal crop domesticated in the Americas, also known as corn. Its diverse kernel colors and chromosome variants made it McClintock’s principal experimental organism.
Thomas Hunt Morgan: An American geneticist whose fruit-fly experiments established chromosome theory of inheritance. McClintock entered genetics in the era shaped by Morgan’s chromosome-based approach to heredity.
Genome: The complete set of genetic material in an organism or cell. McClintock’s work challenged the view of the genome as a fixed arrangement of genes.
Ac-Ds system: A maize genetic system in which Activator and Dissociation elements produce chromosome changes and unstable gene expression. This was the system through which McClintock traced mobile elements and kernel-color changes.
Cytogenetics: The study of chromosomes and their roles in heredity and cell function. McClintock combined chromosome microscopy with genetic crosses to track inherited changes.
George Wells Beadle: An American geneticist who helped establish the one gene–one enzyme hypothesis. Beadle collaborated with McClintock on maize genetics at Cornell.
Barbara McClintock's transposable element discovery: McClintock’s finding that genetic elements in maize can change chromosome positions and gene expression. This discovery became the central contribution for which she was awarded the Nobel Prize.
Activator (genetics): A maize transposable element that can move autonomously and enable movement of Dissociation elements. McClintock identified Activator as the factor that enables Dissociation to move.
Corn genetics: The study of inheritance and genetic variation in maize. Maize inheritance patterns provided the evidence behind McClintock’s discovery.
