Barberton Greenstone Belt

The Barberton Greenstone Belt is an Archean geological region in South Africa and Eswatini, preserving volcanic and sedimentary rocks that record early Earth conditions.

Archean: The earliest eon of the Precambrian, spanning about 4.0 to 2.5 billion years ago. Most of the belt’s rocks formed during this eon.
Volcanic arc: A chain of volcanoes formed above a subduction zone, commonly parallel to a trench. Some interpretations connect the belt’s volcanic rocks to ancient arc-related activity.
Moodies Group: A sedimentary rock sequence in the Barberton Greenstone Belt, including conglomerates, sandstones, and shales. Its sediments record ancient surface environments and the erosion of nearby rocks.
