Barbuda

Barbuda is a low-lying coral island in the eastern Caribbean and one of the two main islands of Antigua and Barbuda. Its sparse settlement, extensive lagoons, and beaches distinguish it from mountainous Antigua.

Coral reef: A marine ecosystem built by corals and other organisms that deposit calcium carbonate. Reefs and reef-derived sediments help define Barbuda’s coastal waters and shores.

Codrington: The principal settlement and largest village on Barbuda, in the parish of Saint John. Most of Barbuda’s residents live in this settlement.
Hurricane Irma: A powerful 2017 Atlantic hurricane that devastated several Caribbean islands. Irma caused near-total destruction in Barbuda and prompted the evacuation of its population.
Antigua: A Caribbean island that is the largest and most populous part of Antigua and Barbuda. Antigua and Barbuda’s government and most of its population are based on this neighboring island.
Codrington Lagoon: A large coastal lagoon on Barbuda’s western side, separated from the Caribbean Sea by a narrow spit. Its sheltered waters and mangroves form one of Barbuda’s defining coastal systems.
Arawak: An Indigenous people of the Caribbean and northern South America, including communities speaking Arawakan languages. Arawak communities lived on Barbuda before European colonization.
Frigate Bird Sanctuary: A protected nesting area for frigatebirds in Barbuda’s Codrington Lagoon. The sanctuary highlights the island’s internationally notable bird habitat.
Hurricane Luis: A major 1995 Atlantic hurricane that struck the northeastern Caribbean. Luis damaged Barbuda and forms an earlier benchmark for the island’s hurricane exposure.
