Bardo

In Tibetan Buddhist teachings, a bardo is an intermediate state between one phase of existence and another, especially the interval between death and rebirth.

Chikhai Bardo: The bardo of the moment of death, when the mind encounters the clear light. It begins the post-death sequence with the dissolution of ordinary experience.
Samsara: The cycle of birth, death, and rebirth driven by ignorance and karma. Bardo states occur within this cycle unless they lead to liberation.
Bardo Thodol: A Tibetan funerary text that guides the deceased through post-death states toward liberation or rebirth. It gives a detailed presentation of the death-related bardos.
Tibetan death rituals: Ritual practices performed around death in Tibetan Buddhist communities, including prayers and guidance for the deceased. Rituals can recite instructions intended to help awareness recognize bardo experiences.
Reincarnation: The belief that an individual soul or essence is born again in another body. Buddhist bardo teachings describe rebirth without affirming a permanent soul.
Chönyid Bardo: The bardo of reality, marked by visionary appearances arising after death. Its peaceful and wrathful appearances shape the middle phase of the death bardo.
Nirvana: Liberation from suffering and the cycle of rebirth in Buddhist traditions. Recognizing reality in a bardo can end the cycle rather than return to it.
Karma Lingpa: A fourteenth-century Tibetan treasure revealer traditionally associated with the discovery of the Bardo Thodol. His name is linked to the text that became the best-known account of the death bardo.
Phowa: A Tibetan Buddhist practice of transferring consciousness at death toward a pure realm or liberation. It offers a distinct death-time practice alongside guidance through the bardos.
Intermediate existence: A postmortem state between death and rebirth recognized in some Buddhist traditions. This broader Buddhist concept parallels the death bardo but is not identical across traditions.
