Knowra Barghash bin Said of Zanzibar Barghash bin Said of Zanzibar Barghash bin Said was the second Sultan of Zanzibar, ruling from 1870 to 1888. He expanded the sultanate’s administration and infrastructure while navigating British pressure to suppress the slave trade.
Stone Town : The historic urban center of Zanzibar City, known for its coral-stone buildings and layered Swahili, Arab, Indian, and European influences. Barghash commissioned major buildings that helped shape Stone Town’s nineteenth-century streetscape.
Sultanate of Zanzibar : A nineteenth-century East African state ruled by the Al Said dynasty from Zanzibar and, at its height, territories along the Swahili coast. Barghash governed this state as its sultan from 1870 to 1888.
Said bin Sultan : The Omani ruler who moved his court to Zanzibar and governed Oman and its overseas possessions until his death in 1856. His reign established Zanzibar’s prominence before Barghash’s generation.
Khalifa bin Said : The Sultan of Zanzibar from 1888 to 1890, succeeding his brother Barghash. Khalifa inherited a state whose finances and foreign relations had been shaped by Barghash.
House of Wonders : A palace in Stone Town built for ceremonial use by Sultan Barghash and completed in 1883. Its construction embodied the court’s investment in monumental architecture and modern amenities.
Al Said dynasty : The ruling dynasty of Oman and Zanzibar, founded by Ahmad bin Said in the eighteenth century. Barghash inherited a dynastic monarchy whose authority extended across the western Indian Ocean.
Majid bin Said : The first Sultan of Zanzibar, who ruled from 1856 until his death in 1870. Barghash succeeded his brother Majid after a contested challenge to Majid’s authority.
Ali bin Said : The Sultan of Zanzibar from 1890 to 1893, during the early period of the British protectorate. His short reign followed the transition from Barghash’s diplomacy to formal British protection.
Zanzibar slave trade : A long-running Indian Ocean trade that transported enslaved people through Zanzibar and other East African ports. British pressure over this trade constrained Barghash’s diplomacy and policy.
Zanzibar National Archives : A repository of historical records relating to Zanzibar, including documents from the sultanate and colonial periods. Its records help trace the administrative changes made under Barghash.
