Baroda State

Baroda State was a princely state in western India, ruled by the Gaekwad dynasty until its integration into independent India in 1949.

Gaekwad dynasty: A Maratha ruling dynasty that governed Baroda State from the eighteenth century until its integration into India. The dynasty’s rule defined Baroda’s political history and succession.
Sayajirao Gaekwad III: The Gaekwad ruler of Baroda from 1875 to 1939, noted for administrative and social reforms. His long reign brought Baroda’s modernization and public institutions to prominence.
Baroda College: A higher-education institution founded in Baroda in 1881, later incorporated into Maharaja Sayajirao University. Its growth reflects the state’s investment in modern education.
Indian independence: The end of British rule in India in 1947 and the establishment of independent India and Pakistan. Independence created the political setting for Baroda’s integration.

Instrument of Accession: A legal document by which a princely state acceded to India or Pakistan after British rule ended. Accession agreements began the transfer of princely-state authority to the new dominions.
Maratha Empire: A major South Asian power that expanded across much of the Indian subcontinent from the seventeenth to nineteenth centuries. Baroda emerged as a regional power within the expanding Maratha sphere.
B. R. Ambedkar: An Indian jurist, economist, and anti-caste leader who briefly served Baroda State after studying abroad. Baroda’s scholarship enabled his education, while his return exposed caste discrimination in state service.
