Barrister

A lawyer qualified to represent clients in court and provide specialist legal advocacy. In jurisdictions with a divided legal profession, barristers are distinct from solicitors.

Court advocacy: The presentation of legal arguments and evidence to a judge or tribunal. Barristers use advocacy to advance clients’ cases in hearings and trials.
Solicitor: A lawyer who advises clients and manages legal matters, with courtroom rights varying by jurisdiction. Solicitors commonly handle client relationships and instruct barristers in divided professions.
Attorney: A person legally authorized to act for another, especially in legal affairs. In some jurisdictions, attorneys perform roles divided between barristers and solicitors elsewhere.
Inns of Court: Four independent professional societies in London that educate and admit barristers in England and Wales. They preserve the profession’s distinctive training and admission traditions.
Legal opinion: A lawyer’s reasoned advice on the law and its application to a particular matter. Barristers may advise on legal merits and strategy before proceedings.
Call to the bar: The formal admission of a person to the profession of barristers in certain jurisdictions. It marks the qualification that permits practice as a barrister.
Advocate: A person who publicly supports a cause or represents another’s interests; in some legal systems, a courtroom lawyer. The title overlaps with barrister in some jurisdictions but has distinct local meanings.
English common law: A legal tradition developed in England through court decisions, statutes, and established customs. The barrister–solicitor division spread through jurisdictions shaped by this tradition.
Cross-examination: Questioning a witness called by the opposing side to test or challenge testimony. It is a central courtroom skill for barristers conducting trials.
Bar association: A professional organization for lawyers, which may regulate or represent legal practitioners. Bar associations can set standards, provide support, or exercise regulatory functions.
