Barter

Barter is the direct exchange of goods or services for other goods or services without using money as a medium of exchange.

Double coincidence of wants: A condition in exchange where each party has something the other wants and wants what the other offers. Direct trade requires both parties to want each other’s offerings at the same time.
Corporate barter: The exchange of goods or services among businesses, often through a specialized intermediary. Businesses use barter to trade inventory, advertising, or services without immediate cash payment.
Economic anthropology: The study of how economic activity is embedded in social, cultural, and political life. Anthropologists compare barter with other forms of exchange across societies.
Monetary exchange: The exchange of goods or services using money as a medium of payment. Money lets a seller accept payment without wanting the buyer’s product.
Bargaining: A negotiation in which parties seek agreement on the terms of an exchange. Barter partners negotiate quantities and terms without a common monetary price.
Local exchange trading system: A community exchange network that records members’ offers and transactions, often using an internal unit of account. These networks organize reciprocal trading beyond one pair of barter partners.
Adam Smith: An eighteenth-century Scottish economist and philosopher whose work helped establish classical political economy. Smith popularized a historical account in which barter’s limits encourage the invention of money.
Reciprocity: A pattern of exchange in which giving and returning are linked by social expectations, not necessarily immediate equivalence. Reciprocal obligations can connect exchanges across time and relationships, unlike a discrete barter deal.
Relative value: The worth of one good or service compared with another in a particular exchange. Each barter trade must establish how much of one offering equals another.
Time banking: A community system in which members exchange services using time credits, commonly valued equally by the hour. It applies direct service exchange through a shared credit system rather than cash.
