Baryte

Baryte is the naturally occurring mineral barium sulfate (BaSO₄), distinguished by its high density. It forms in settings including hydrothermal veins and supplies barium for industrial uses.

Barium sulfate: An inorganic compound with formula BaSO₄, occurring naturally as baryte and synthetically as a white solid. Baryte is the mineral form of this compound.
Hydrothermal circulation: The movement of heated water through rocks, transporting dissolved chemicals and altering minerals. Hydrothermal fluids can carry the barium and sulfate that precipitate as baryte.
Drilling fluid: A circulating fluid used during drilling to cool equipment, carry cuttings, and control well pressure. Ground baryte raises drilling-fluid density to help control formation pressure.
Mississippi Valley-type lead-zinc deposit: A carbonate-hosted ore deposit containing lead and zinc minerals, formed from warm saline fluids. Baryte occurs in some deposits of this type, alongside sulfide ores.
Orthorhombic crystal system: A crystal system with three unequal axes meeting at right angles. Baryte crystallizes in this system, shaping its characteristic crystal forms.
Mineral precipitation: The formation of solid mineral phases from a solution when conditions favor crystallization. Baryte forms when dissolved barium and sulfate reach saturation and crystallize.
Oil well: A borehole drilled to extract petroleum or natural gas from underground reservoirs. Oil and gas wells are the main setting for baryte’s use as a weighting material.
Sedimentary exhalative deposit: A stratiform mineral deposit formed when metal-bearing hydrothermal fluids discharge into a sedimentary basin. Baryte is common in some deposits formed by seafloor fluid discharge.
Mohs scale: A scale that ranks minerals by their resistance to scratching, from talc at 1 to diamond at 10. Baryte’s hardness of about 3 to 3.5 helps distinguish it from denser, harder minerals.
Solubility product: An equilibrium constant describing the concentrations of dissolved ions in a saturated solution of a sparingly soluble solid. Baryte’s very low solubility helps it precipitate when barium-rich and sulfate-rich waters mix.
