Base and superstructure

A Marxist model in which the economic organization of production forms a base related to political, legal, and cultural institutions and ideas. The model examines how these layers shape and sustain one another.

Mode of production: The historically specific way a society organizes production, including its productive forces and relations of production. A mode of production names the broader economic formation that constitutes the base.
Karl Marx: A German philosopher and political economist whose critique of capitalism founded Marxism. Marx supplied the model’s analysis of production and historical change.
Economic determinism: The view that economic factors ultimately determine social, political, or cultural outcomes. It is a reductive reading of the model that treats the superstructure as a passive effect.
Hegemony: Leadership through which a social group secures consent and makes its worldview appear broadly legitimate. It shows how cultural and political power can help reproduce class relations.
Class consciousness: Awareness of shared class interests and of a class’s position within social relations of production. The model raises how social conditions shape political understanding and collective action.
Relations of production: The social relationships through which people organize ownership, labor, and control in production. These relationships form a core part of the economic base.
Friedrich Engels: A German philosopher and political theorist who collaborated with Marx and developed Marxist thought. Engels helped formulate and later clarify the relation between economic conditions and ideas.
Relative autonomy: The capacity of political or cultural institutions to operate with some independence from economic relations. This idea qualifies claims that every superstructural change directly follows economic shifts.
Ideological State Apparatuses: Institutions such as schools, families, and media that reproduce ideology and social relations in Althusser’s theory. This concept specifies institutions through which superstructural practices reproduce the social order.
Commodity fetishism: The appearance that relations among people in capitalist production are properties of commodities themselves. Marx’s account links everyday cultural perception to underlying economic relations.
