Base (foundation)

A base is the lowest or supporting part of an object, structure, or system, or the underlying basis on which something rests.

Foundation: The lowest structural part of a building or other construction, transferring its loads to the ground. In construction, a foundation is the part most directly meant by a supporting base.
Structural load: A force or other action that a structure must resist. Loads from above determine what a supporting base must carry.
Database schema: A formal description of a database’s structure, including its tables, fields, and relationships. A schema supplies the structural basis on which stored information is organized.
Superstructure: The part of a structure built above its foundation, or a higher-level system built on an underlying one. It names what a structural or conceptual base supports above it.
Footing (architecture): A foundation element that spreads a structure’s load across supporting soil or rock. Footings provide a specific, load-spreading form of structural base.
Load path: The route through structural elements by which forces travel to the ground. A base is the final link in many buildings’ load paths.
Operating system: Software that manages computer hardware and provides services to applications. Applications rely on it as a software foundation.
Capstone: A finishing stone or element placed at the top of a structure or completed work. A capstone occupies a finishing position opposite a base’s supporting position.
Bedrock: The solid rock beneath soil, sediment, or other loose surface material. Bedrock can underlie a foundation and carry structural loads.
Bearing capacity: The maximum pressure soil or rock can sustain before failure or unacceptable settlement. It limits the force a base can safely transfer to the ground.
