Baseball statistics

Numerical measures summarize individual and team performance, game events, and outcomes in baseball. They range from traditional counts and rates to models that estimate a player's contribution.

Batting average: A rate measuring a batter’s hits per official at-bat. This familiar rate captures one narrow part of offensive performance.
Sabermetrics: The empirical analysis of baseball, especially through statistical evidence. It provides the broader analytical approach behind many modern measures.
Runs scored: The number of times a team or player crosses home plate to score. Actual scoring is the outcome many performance measures seek to explain.
Baseball scouting: The evaluation of players’ abilities and potential for recruitment or team decisions. Scouts combine statistical records with observations of skills and projection.
Sample size: The number of observations used to estimate a statistical quantity. Small samples make early-season performance rates especially unstable.
On-base percentage: The proportion of a batter’s plate appearances that result in reaching base, with specified exclusions. It counts walks and hit-by-pitches as well as hits, unlike batting average.
Weighted runs created plus: An offensive rate statistic adjusted for league and ballpark, with 100 representing league average. It converts batting production into a park- and era-adjusted comparison.
Win–loss record: A count of games won and lost by a team or pitcher. Records are visible outcomes but can poorly isolate an individual’s contribution.
Baseball analytics: The use of data and quantitative analysis to guide baseball decisions. Teams apply statistics to personnel, tactics, and player development.
Park factor: A measure of how a ballpark affects scoring or particular outcomes relative to other parks. Park effects complicate comparisons between players in different home venues.
