BASIC

BASIC is a family of high-level programming languages designed to make computer programming accessible to beginners. Its name is an acronym for Beginner’s All-purpose Symbolic Instruction Code.

Dartmouth BASIC: The original BASIC dialect, developed at Dartmouth College and released in 1964. Its interactive design established the model that later BASIC dialects adapted.
John G. Kemeny: An American mathematician and computer scientist who co-created BASIC at Dartmouth College. Kemeny championed accessible computing and helped shape BASIC’s educational purpose.
Bill Gates: An American software entrepreneur who co-founded Microsoft and co-wrote an early Altair BASIC interpreter. His Altair BASIC helped establish Microsoft and made BASIC central to microcomputing.
Computer programming education: The teaching and learning of methods for writing, testing, and maintaining computer programs. BASIC was created to let students learn programming without prior computer-science training.

BASIC interpreter: A program that reads and executes BASIC source code, often one statement at a time. Many early BASIC systems let beginners run commands immediately through an interpreter.
Thomas E. Kurtz: An American mathematician and computer scientist who co-created BASIC at Dartmouth College. Kurtz co-designed the language and its time-sharing implementation.
Paul Allen: An American software entrepreneur and programmer who co-founded Microsoft. Allen helped develop the Altair BASIC interpreter with Bill Gates.
Altair BASIC: A BASIC interpreter written for the Altair 8800 microcomputer and released in 1975. It became one of the first widely distributed products for personal computers.
Pascal: A programming language designed by Niklaus Wirth to encourage structured programming and teaching. Pascal emphasized disciplined structure more strongly than early BASIC dialects.
