Basque language

Basque is a language spoken in the Basque Country of Spain and France. It is a language isolate, with no demonstrated genetic relationship to any other living language family.

Ergative–absolutive alignment: A grammatical alignment that marks the transitive agent differently from the intransitive subject and transitive object. Basque uses ergative marking, unlike the nominative–accusative pattern of nearby Spanish and French.
Language isolate: A language with no demonstrated genealogical relationship to another language. Basque is the only surviving language isolate in western Europe.

Francoist repression of Basque: Restrictions on Basque language and culture under Francisco Franco’s dictatorship in Spain. Suppression in public life contributed to language decline during the dictatorship.
Basque noun phrase: The grammatical structure containing a Basque noun and its modifiers, with case and number commonly marked at the phrase’s end. Case suffixes attach to the final word of a noun phrase, not necessarily the noun itself.
Proto-Basque: The reconstructed ancestor of the Basque varieties documented in historical records. Historical linguists infer earlier Basque forms from shared features across dialects.
