Basra

Basra is a major port city in southern Iraq, near the Persian Gulf. It is Iraq’s principal gateway to the Gulf and a historic center of trade and culture.

Utba ibn Ghazwan: An Arab commander who founded Basra as a garrison settlement in 638. He established the city under the early caliphate.
Shatt al-Arab: A river formed by the confluence of the Tigris and Euphrates, flowing southeast to the Persian Gulf. Basra’s maritime access depends on this waterway.
Iraq War: The 2003 invasion of Iraq and the subsequent conflict that overthrew Saddam Hussein’s government. Coalition forces captured Basra during the invasion’s opening phase.
Basrawi Arabic: A variety of Iraqi Arabic spoken in and around Basra in southern Iraq. Its features reflect the city’s regional history and contact with neighboring communities.
Rashidun Caliphate: The first caliphate after the death of Muhammad, ruling from 632 to 661. Basra emerged as a military and administrative center during its expansion.
Persian Gulf: A shallow sea between the Arabian Peninsula and Iran, connected to the Gulf of Oman. It is the body of water that makes Basra a Gulf port.
Iran–Iraq War: A war between Iran and Iraq from 1980 to 1988, fought along a contested border. The city and its surrounding waterways were exposed to fighting and disruption.
Ma’qoodah: A Basrawi dish of mashed potato patties, commonly filled with meat and fried. It is a well-known expression of the city’s food culture.
Kufa: A city in central Iraq founded as an Arab garrison town in 638. Like Basra, it became a major center of early Islamic political and religious life.
Port of Basra: Iraq’s principal maritime port complex, serving trade through the Shatt al-Arab and Gulf. It translates the city’s coastal position into shipping access.
