Batch reactor

A closed vessel in which reactants are charged, processed for a set period, and discharged without continuous feed or product flow.

Batch process: A manufacturing process that handles materials in discrete lots rather than continuous flow. The reactor is the vessel at the heart of this mode of production.
Chemical reactor: Equipment in which chemical reactions are carried out under controlled conditions. A batch reactor is one operating mode within the broader reactor family.
Pharmaceutical manufacturing: The industrial production of medicines and their active ingredients under controlled quality requirements. Batch records and flexible campaigns suit many drug-production steps.
Continuous stirred-tank reactor: A stirred reactor operated with continuous feed and product withdrawal, typically at steady state. Continuous inflow and outflow distinguish it from a closed batch charge.
Material balance: An accounting of material entering, leaving, accumulating, or reacting within a system. During reaction, changing inventory tracks how reactants become products.
Stirred tank reactor: A tank reactor equipped with an impeller to mix its contents. The stirred tank is a common vessel design for batch operation.
Fermentation: The microbial conversion of substrates into products under controlled conditions. Many fermentations charge a vessel, cultivate organisms, then harvest the batch.
Plug flow reactor: A continuous reactor in which fluid moves through a tube with limited axial mixing. It processes material as a moving stream rather than a stationary charge.
Reaction kinetics: The study of how reaction rates depend on concentrations, temperature, and other conditions. Kinetics determines how long a batch must remain in the vessel.
Impeller: A rotating device that transfers mechanical energy to a fluid and promotes circulation or mixing. Its geometry influences mixing and suspension inside the vessel.
