Bats

Bats are mammals in the order Chiroptera, distinguished by forelimbs adapted into wings and the ability to sustain powered flight.

Bat wing: A flexible flight surface formed by skin stretched across elongated finger bones and the body. Its long fingers support a membrane that changes shape during each wingbeat.
Chiroptera: The mammalian order that includes all bats. Bats are the sole living members of this order.
Insectivorous bat: A bat whose diet consists primarily of insects. Insect-eating species consume agricultural pests and other nocturnal insects.
Bird flight: Powered flight in birds, using feathered wings supported by forelimbs. Birds and bats evolved powered flight independently using very different wing structures.
Bat flight: Powered flight produced by repeated wingbeats, with lift and thrust generated by moving wings. Bats maneuver through complex airflows by flexing their highly articulated wings.
Mammal: A vertebrate animal whose females produce milk and whose members generally have hair. Bats retain mammalian traits despite their unusual capacity for flight.
Bat pollination: The transfer of pollen by bats visiting flowers for nectar or other food. Some plants rely on bats as pollinators, especially in tropical and desert ecosystems.
Pterosaur: An extinct group of flying reptiles whose wings were supported by an elongated fourth finger. Pterosaurs provide another independent evolutionary origin of vertebrate powered flight.
Echolocation: A sensing system that uses returning echoes from emitted sounds to locate objects. Many bats use returning calls to detect prey and obstacles in darkness.
Mammalian evolution: The evolutionary history and diversification of mammals. Bat flight arose within mammalian evolution rather than from a separate vertebrate lineage.
