Battery energy storage system

A battery energy storage system stores electrical energy in rechargeable batteries and returns it to a power network or local load when needed.

Lithium-ion battery: A rechargeable battery that stores energy through lithium-ion movement between electrodes. Lithium-ion cells are the most widely deployed chemistry in grid-scale storage.
Frequency regulation: A grid service that adjusts generation or demand to keep electricity-system frequency near its target. Fast battery response can correct short-term imbalances between supply and demand.
Battery cell: The smallest electrochemical unit in a battery that stores and releases electrical energy. Cells are combined into modules and racks to reach a system’s required capacity.
Pumped-storage hydropower: A storage method that pumps water uphill and later releases it through turbines to generate electricity. It offers large-scale, long-duration storage through reservoirs rather than electrochemical cells.
Battery management system: Electronics that monitor and protect a battery’s cells during charging and discharging. It keeps cells within safe voltage, temperature, and state-of-charge limits.
Peak shaving: Reducing maximum electricity demand by shifting some consumption to lower-demand periods. A battery can discharge during local or system demand peaks.
Battery pack: An assembly of battery cells connected and packaged to operate as one unit. Packs or racks make up the electrochemical portion of larger installations.
Thermal energy storage: A method of storing energy as heat or cold for later use. It stores thermal energy directly instead of returning electricity from batteries.
Bidirectional inverter: A power converter that changes direct current to alternating current and can reverse that flow. It connects battery DC to grid AC during both charging and discharge.
Renewable energy: Energy from sources replenished naturally, including sunlight, wind, and flowing water. Storage can shift variable renewable output to times when generation is low.
