Batting average

Batting average is a cricket statistic calculated by dividing a batter’s total runs by the number of times they have been dismissed.

Dismissal (cricket): A dismissal ends a batter’s innings under one of cricket’s recognized methods of getting out. Only innings ending in a dismissal count in the average’s denominator.
Don Bradman: Don Bradman was an Australian batter whose Test career average was 99.94. His Test average is the sport’s most famous benchmark for batting excellence.
Batting strike rate: Batting strike rate measures runs scored per 100 balls faced in limited-overs cricket. It measures scoring speed, while batting average measures runs per dismissal.
Batting (cricket): Batting is the act of scoring runs and protecting wickets while a cricket team is at the crease. Batting average summarizes one aspect of a player’s batting record.
Not out: A batter is not out when their innings ends without their dismissal. An unbeaten innings adds runs but does not add a dismissal to the denominator.

Runs per innings: Runs per innings is a measure of average runs scored in each batting innings, including not-outs in the count. Counting innings rather than dismissals changes the effect of unbeaten scores.
Cricket scorecard: A cricket scorecard records runs, dismissals, balls faced, and other match statistics. Scorecards supply the figures needed to calculate an individual average.
Innings (cricket): A team’s innings is its turn to bat; an individual batter’s innings is their period at the crease. The number of completed batting innings is not necessarily the number of dismissals.
One Day International: A One Day International is a limited-overs cricket match between national teams, typically lasting one day. Its batting averages describe performance in a format with different scoring and dismissal patterns.
