Battle of Adwa

The Battle of Adwa was Ethiopia’s decisive victory over invading Italian forces on 1 March 1896, preserving Ethiopian independence and ending Italy’s first attempt at colonization.

Menelik II: Emperor of Ethiopia from 1889 to 1913 who led the country during its victory at Adwa. He assembled Ethiopia’s forces and directed the campaign against Italy.
Treaty of Wuchale: A 1889 treaty between Ethiopia and Italy whose Amharic and Italian texts differed over Ethiopia’s foreign relations. The disputed wording gave rise to the immediate diplomatic crisis before the war.
Treaty of Addis Ababa: The 1896 treaty that ended the First Italo-Ethiopian War and recognized Ethiopia’s independence. It formalized the military victory and annulled the Treaty of Wuchale.
