Battle of Alesia

The Roman siege and battle of 52 BCE in which Julius Caesar defeated Vercingetorix, helping secure Roman control over much of Gaul.

Circumvallation: A line of fortifications built around a besieged place to contain its defenders. Caesar’s inner defenses enclosed Alesia and blocked Vercingetorix’s breakout.
Julius Caesar: Roman general and statesman who led the conquest of Gaul and later became dictator of Rome. He commanded the Roman army and described the campaign in his own account.
Gallic Wars: A series of Roman campaigns from 58 to 50 BCE that brought much of Gaul under Roman control. Alesia was the decisive climax of Caesar’s conquest of Gaul.
Roman Gaul: The territories of Gaul incorporated into Roman rule and later organized as Roman provinces. Alesia cleared the way for Roman authority to consolidate across much of Gaul.
Mount Auxois: A hill in Burgundy, France, identified with the ancient site of Alesia. Its elevated position gave the defenders a stronghold while constraining Caesar’s siege lines.
Contravallation: A line of fortifications facing outward from a besieging army to resist attacks from outside. Caesar’s outer defenses faced the Gallic relief army approaching the siege.
Vercingetorix: A Gallic leader who united several peoples in revolt against Roman rule during Caesar’s Gallic campaigns. He directed Alesia’s defenders and surrendered after the relief effort failed.
Gallic revolt of 52 BCE: A widespread uprising by Gallic peoples against Roman rule, led by Vercingetorix in 52 BCE. The uprising created the military crisis that brought Caesar and Vercingetorix to Alesia.
Romanization: The adoption and adaptation of Roman institutions, practices, and material culture in conquered regions. The conquest that Alesia helped secure set long-term cultural and political changes in motion.
Alesia: An ancient Gallic settlement identified with the oppidum at Mont-Auxois in modern Burgundy, France. The battle takes its name from the fortified settlement Caesar surrounded.
